E3 2018: GEARS 5 Brings Kait Diaz’s Story to the Forefront

During the Xbox Showcase at E3 2018 this past Sunday we were given a look at the latest installment of the Gears of War franchise: Gears 5. The storyline will pick up right after the events of Gears of War 4 and looks to answer questions that arose during that time. Gears 5 will follow the story of Kait Diaz, voiced by the amazing Laura Bailey, as she investigates her grandmother’s amulet and her connection to the Locust Queen. This new installment will still focus on the action and thrills that the series is known for, but it will also strive to incorporate an intense emotional roller coaster throughout the storyline. The trailer really helps showcase all of the elements they wish to bring to Gears 5.

Focusing on an intense and emotional storyline is not the only thing Gears 5 is bringing to the table. For the first time in the series the main protagonist will be a female. Players will take control of Kait Diaz and delve deeper into her story. This has some fans reeling in excitement and others not so much. With just a glimpse at the story  they are looking to tell in Gears 5, it is almost impossible to see anyone else being the main character. You wouldn’t tell the story of Tomb Raider from the perspective of the random guy that tags along with Lara Croft right? The trailer gives Kait a lot of screen time and really allows us to see just how far she is willing to go to get the answers she needs.

Gears 5 is the first installment in the series to drop the “of War” part of its name as well. For years players have been shortening the title down to Gears and it was time Microsoft did the same. They are also boasting that this is going to be the largest and most visually stunning Gears to date. Gears 5 definitely has some big shoes to fill, but after everything we have seen I think it’s going to my favorite yet!

Gears 5 will be released in 2019 and will be exclusive to Xbox One and PC.
