E3 2018: DEVIL MAY CRY Series is Returning After 10 Years

Julia Roth

At the E3 2018 showcase for Xbox this past Sunday we were treated to more than twenty game trailers. None of them; however, hit me more in the feels than Capcom‘s Devil May Cry 5. The moment of realization of what I was about to witness left me so excited I couldn’t speak. Maybe it is the nostalgia overflow, but Devil May Cry has been an amazing memory of mine since I picked up my first copy back in 2001. It was my first real taste of a true action-packed third person thriller with a bit of humor tossed in. I know that we have had our taste of DMC over the last few years, but the last real installment was DMC 4 back in 2008. Finally after 10 years we get to return to their world and kick some demon butt.

Devil May Cry 5 will take place in Red Grave City after a demon tree takes root and brings on the next demonic invasion. The hellish power attracts the young demon hunter Nero who is missing his demonic arm, you know, the source of most his power. Don’t worry too much about that though because the trailer gives us a peek at his new robotic arm that looks like it will pack a real punch. On his way to town in the Devil May Cry motor home (which is the mode of transportation I am going to require for all road trips) he fills his partner Nico in on what has been going on these last couple years. Most importantly, he has no idea of Dante’s whereabouts. There is only one thing that needs to be done: bring an end to this evil and save the world.

Director Hideaki Itsuno and his core team have returned to bring Devil May Cry 5 to life. Thanks to improvements in the ability to use photo-realistic character designs and upgrades to visual designs, the world of DMC 5 and the people in it look truly amazing. The game will feature three playable characters, Nero, Dante, and one unnamed player, who each boast their own style of combat and flavor. Devil May Cry 5 will close out the last chapter in the “Sons of Sparda” saga and hopefully bring an end to the demon invasions. This is one of the biggest highlights for me from the E3 showcases and I cannot wait to see what else they have to share over the next year.

Devil May Cry 5 will be released Spring 2019 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
