Hasbro, Wizards of the Coast and Paramount Plus are coming together to bring us more Dungeons and Dragons content. Deadline broke the exclusive news that Hasbro and eOne began shopping around the idea of a series back in November. Paramount Plus eventually won them over, and the eight-episode series was born.

Paramount Plus and eOne tapped filmmaker Rawson Marshall Thurber to write the pilot script and direct the first episode. This isn’t the first Dungeons and Dragons partnership between eOne and Paramount. The two have been working together to co-produce and co-finance Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley‘s upcoming film, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which is set to hit theaters on March 31, 2023.

It is unknown whether the live-action series will tie into the film or be a separate story. But we do know that it is going to be a fantasy-based epic adventure. Michael Lombardo, eOne’s President of Global Television, has been trying to get an adaptation of the franchise in the works since Hasbro acquired them in 2019. This could be the series that gives birth to a mega Dungeons and Dragons universe with scripted and unscripted movies and TV series.

Paramount and eOne have not shared any information about what the series will entail other than that it will be based within the Dungeons and Dragons world. And while we are excited about this, there is also quite a bit to worry about. Would a serious series stand a chance with heavy-hitting fantasy shows like Game of Thrones already ruling that market? Or, will they go with a more laid-back comedy-based story and compete with Critical Role‘s animated adaptation, The Legend of Vox Machina?

We still have quite a bit of time before we get any concrete ideas of where this story will take us. What are your thoughts on this upcoming series? Let us know in the comments below and on social media.
