Control
HBO dropped a new teaser trailer for their Bene Gesserit-focused series Dune: Prophecy (formerly called Dune: The Sisterhood) and it’s giving us a deeper peek into the world of sci-fi’s favorite secret sisterhood. This is to say, they are into mental, emotional, and physical control over their own bodies and the workings of the Known Universe. And judging from this teaser trailer, they are not to be trifled with.
Based on the novel Sisterhood of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, Dune: Prophecy takes place millennia before the events of the Dune. From the official logline: “The series takes place 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides and follows two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit”

How It All Started
In the teaser trailer, we spend a lot of time with Valya Harkonnen played by the great Emily Watson (Chernobyl, Gosford Park, Angela’s Ashes). Valya is one of the founders of the Bene Gesserit and one of the first true Reverend Mothers of the Order. She’s a legendary character in the Dune universe and we see her being properly epic as she lays out the mission statement for all Bene Gesserit. “If you wish to serve the great houses and shape the flow of power, you must first exert power over yourself.”

Sacrifices Must Be Made
What follows is some table setting for the series. Only 80 years after humanity defeated the great thinking machines, the Known Universe has begun reorganizing itself around new structures. In pure Dune style, we see not only the sisters training their bodies and minds at their headquarters, but the growing list of enemies they are making in the courts of the Landsraad, the political body of noble houses that rules the Dune Imperium.
The ultimate power brokers and behind-the-scenes players, The Bene Gesserit insinuate themselves into the courts of the noble houses as advisors, spin-masters, and often, lovers of the great and powerful. We see their guile and the physical fighting skills they employ to keep their hands on the tiller of power.

With the Mentats and Spacing Guilds also in their nascent stages and coming to power, that’s a tough job with lots of shifting currents. Keeping control of the machine requires being a stone-cold operator. Or, as Watson’s Valya puts it, “Sacrifices must be made”. Yeah… for Dune fans… this looks like good stuff.
Dune: Prophecy’s Stacked Cast
Adding to the anticipation is a rockstar cast. Along with Watson that cast includes Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, Jodhi May, Mark Strong, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Josh Heuston, Chloe Lea, Jade Anouka, Faoileann Cunningham, Edward Davis, Aoife Hinds, Chris Mason, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Camilla Beeput, Jihae, Tabu, Charithra Chandran, Jessica Barden, Emma Canning, and Yerin Ha.
Dune: Prophecy has no specific release date yet, though the trailer tells us it will drop the first episode of the six-episode season on Max in November. Are you a Dune fan? What are your theories about what revelations about the universe Dune: Prophecy will feature? Let us know in the comments.
