Dave Bautista will star alongside Timothée Chalamet and Rebecca Ferguson in Denis Villeneuve‘s remake of Dune. The Hollywood Reporter states Bautista will play the Beast Rabban Harkonnen for the remake. Bautista and Villeneuve previously worked together on Blade Runner: 2049.
Dune tells the story of a young nobleman Paul Atreides (Chalamet), whose destiny is fulfilled after his father is murdered and he’s left stranded on the desert planet Arrakis with his mother, Lady Jessica (Ferguson). Arrakis is home to the Spice, or melange. A substance in high demand throughout the universe. “He who controls the Spice, controls the Universe.” As you can expect there is a great battle, pitting families against families for prime control.
The Harkonnens control Arrakis at the beginning of Paul’s story, but the feud between the Harkonnens and Atreides is an even longer story. Rabban Harkonnen is the nephew of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen who is charged with overseeing the spice production on Arrakis. Rabban was given the nickname “The Beast” after he killed his father. Bautista definitely has the look of a Beast. He will be fun to watch.
The Frank Herbert novel was previously adapted by David Lynch in 1984. And then again for the SYFY channel as a mini-series in 2000. Villeneuve told Cinemablend that he plans to make at least two Dune movies. I think that’s great! The book has so much story to tell. The characters are so extra…we definitely need more than one film to capture it all.
The Dune remake is currently in pre-production.
