In an interview with io9,writer/director Drew Goddard, known as the director of Cabin in the Woods and writer of upcoming film The Martian, spoke about his old Spider-Man project, The Sinister Six. He was originally going to be showrunner for the the Netflix series, Daredevil, but left when Sony offered him the writing/directing job for Sinister Six.

Then the infamous Sony emails leaked.

And then Sony and Marvel joined forces to bring Spider-Man into the MCU.

And Drew Goddard’s “giant, epic Spider-Man movie of my dreams” was left behind in the mess. Collateral damage of every Marvel fan finally getting what they want.

But as Goddard says in his interview, perhaps not all hope is lost.

“My vision of that movie was a summer annual. So you didn’t have to worry about continuity. It was just, ‘We take Peter, put him on an adventure, we put him back in his life.’ I intentionally wanted a movie that didn’t have to worry about mythology and continuity. It was important to me to make a movie that could stand on its own. So the good news is, you know, [laughs], it slots in very well to any plan anybody ever wants. We just need to let a couple years go by, I think.”

So the film, as he planned it, is already designed to be off on its own, no tie-ins, no planned continuity, easy to plug in anywhere and just have a kick ass web slinging film. This would absolutely make it a much easier story to incorporate into whatever Sony and Marvel end up doing with the Tom Holland led Spider-Man franchise.

However, let’s all be careful with our expectations on this.

Sure it’s still possible, the film could still happen and maybe it will, fingers crossed that it does, but that’s like saying Drew Goddard could decide he wants to write a film where Spider-Man can’t decide whether to eat at Noah’s Bagels or Jersey Mikes — “could” does not equal “will” or even “likely.”

In this instance, a lot of pieces would have to fall in to place for this to happen. Thankfully, a lot of those pieces really like Drew Goddard and his vision for Spider-Man. The fact is that this is no longer in active development, so while we’re crossing our fingers, we’re also not holding our breath.

And what does Goddard think of Feige and the Sony/Marvel Spider-Man deal? Does he hold any ill will to the deal hurting his Sinister Six film?

“The tricky part about all this is I love this plan. I love that you get to see Spider-Man in Marvel movies. I think that’s a great thing. I’m on board with that decision because as a fan that’s what I want. So who knows what the future holds? This is Hollywood, man, you’ve gotta play the long game.”

Hopefully the long game pays off and we get an amazing Sinister Six film somewhere down the line!
