That’s right, Crawley fans!  The long-awaited, much anticipated film version of your favorite upstairs/downstairs Edwardian drama is happening.  Production on the Downton Abbey movie starts this summer.

And, that’s not the only good news!  The original cast is back.  That includes Michelle Dockery, Hugh Boneville and the incomparable Dame Maggie Smith.  Smith’s decision to refrain from coming back for another season is what made producers end the series all together.  So, her return is big news.

Brian Percival, who directed the series’ pilot, will direct the film.  Creator Julian Fellowes and producer Gareth Neame will also be involved, according to people.com.

It’ll be interesting to see what the Crawleys face in the Downton Abbey film.  A movie is a much more restrictive narrative format than, say, six seasons of a series.  The series wrapped up nicely with a Christmas special, but the final season was wrought with change and the end of an era.  So, where the Crawleys pick up and how they move forward will be of great interest to fans.

There is no official release date set for the Downton movie.  We’ll keep our ears to the wall.
