Doom Patrol and Michelle Gomez fans, today’s your lucky day. Entertainment Weekly has unveiled two exclusive photos of Gomez as Madame Rouge in the highly anticipated third season of Doom Patrol! Perhaps Mondays aren’t so bad, after all.
Now, Madame Rouge is an antagonist for our titular characters, at least in the comics. Her civilian name is Laura De Mille, and she’s a leading member of the Brotherhood of Evil. Madame Rouge’s superpower is the ability to change her shape and appearance at will. She made her comic book debut in 1964 in a story entitled “The Brotherhood of Evil,” penned by Doom Patrol creator Arnold Drake.

Doom Patrol showrunner Jeremy Carver gushed about Gomez in the role to EW. Here’s what he had to say:
When I was talking to her about the part, I was trying to explain to her that in our eyes the Madame Rouge of Doom Patrol is much like the other characters in that you can’t quite pin them as good or bad. They’ve all done things they’re ashamed of, but that doesn’t necessarily make them bad people.
This wrestling with ‘Am I good or bad?’ is really at the heart of Michelle’s character arc this season, and she wrings more out of a line in terms of finding comedy or pathos than just about anybody. I think what she brings to the show is just thrilling.
It’s frankly a funny path of self-discovery because when she comes to be with the Doom Patrol, she’s completely forgotten who she is and what her powers are. So watching her rediscover what she can do is hopefully a lot of fun and a little silly. She’s just been nothing short of amazing for us this year.
As for me, I’ve always been an avid fan of Gomez, notably her portrayal of Missy on Doctor Who. No matter the role, she has this uncanny ability to immerse herself completely. She’s a character actress, through and through, and a damn talented one at that.
