Varada Sethu Gets Timey-Wimey

Per Doctor Who‘s official siteAndor star Varada Sethu joins Season 2 of the long-running sci-fi series in an undisclosed role. BBC Studios/Bad Wolf has released two first-look photos from the set, featuring Sethu with Ncuti Gatwa (the Fifteenth Doctor) and Millie Gibson (Ruby Sunday).

In January, we heard that Gibson would only stick around for one season, with Sethu replacing her. Variety initially reported the news. Thankfully, that’s not the case. Gibson will stay on as Ruby Sunday, with Sethu joining Team TARDIS as a second companion.

Sethu’s credits include Cinta Kaz on the critically lauded Star Wars series Andor. She’s also appeared in Jurassic World Dominion as Shira, Annika as DC Harper Weston and Strike Back as LCpl. Manisha Chetri.

Joining the Whoniverse

Here’s what Sethu has to say about joining the Whoniverse:

“I feel like the luckiest person in the world. It is such an honour to be a part of the Whoniverse, and I’m so grateful to the whole Doctor Who family – because that is what they are – for welcoming me with open arms and making me feel so at home. I couldn’t ask for a better team than Ncuti and Millie to be on this adventure with; this is SO much fun!”

Showrunner Russell T Davies adds:

“I first worked with Varada on a BBC production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and it’s a joy to welcome her on board the TARDIS. Right now in the studio, shooting for 2025, we’ve got Ncuti, Millie and Varada fighting side by side – we need all three, because the stakes are higher than ever!”

All of Time and Space

I’m so excited that Millie Gibson’s staying, and we’re getting a second companion with Varada Sethu. Plus, I’m already loving Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor. Bring on all the timey-wimey adventures with this trio.

Doctor Who Season 1 premieres with two episodes on Friday, May 10, 2024, on Disney+. UK fans can expect the series to debut on BBC iPlayer at midnight on May 11. Season 2 is currently in production and will air in 2025.
