Doctor Who Season 2 Episode 6, “The Interstellar Song Contest”

The Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and Belinda Chandra’s (Varada Sethu) season-long adventure finds them in another unexpected locale — a space station. Poor Belinda just wants to go home, but admittedly, her resolve has softened somewhat over the past few episodes as she and our titular Time Lord grow closer. This week’s Doctor Who outing is heavily inspired by the Eurovision Song Contest, and the timing couldn’t be more relevant.

Here’s a synopsis per Disney and BBC:

“The Doctor’s quest to get Belinda home to Earth leads to a space station hosting a famous song contest. But a harmless night of fun soon becomes a battle to survive.”

The Cast and Crew

“The Interstellar Song Contest” stars Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor, Varada Sethu as Belinda, Akemnji Ndifornyen as Len, Freddie Fox as Kid, Kadiff Kirwan as Mike, Miriam Teak-Lee as Cora, Kiruna Stamell as Nina, Iona Anderson as Wynn, Rylan Clark as himself, Julie Dray as Sabine, Charlie Condou as Gary, Christina Rotondo as Liz Lizardine and Anita Dobson as Mrs. Flood. Ben A. Williams directs from a script by Juno Dawson.

I love the Slow Horses kick this show is on — episode three, “The Well,” featured Christopher Chung, and this week’s outing brings Kirwan and Fox into the fold. I hope this series slips in more appearances from Slow Horses actors. Additionally, Rylan Clark is a real-life host and TV personality, serving as a semi-final co-commentator for Eurovision. Art imitates life and vice versa.

Fun fact: our Fifteenth Doctor will be the UK Jury’s spokesperson at this year’s Eurovision, which is happening right now.

So, how will Mrs. Flood be woven into the episodic narrative this week? As of writing, we’ve seen her as Belinda’s neighbor twice, as a spectator outside a theater in 1950s Miami, as a senior officer of a futuristic space organization and as “The Governor,” the latter of whom freed Conrad Clark (Jonah Hauer-King) in episode four, “Lucky Day.” I hope she’s a contestant in the eponymous song contest.

Doctor Who Season 2 airs on Saturdays at 3 am EST/12 am PST on Disney+ and 8 am BST on BBC iPlayer in the UK. Before you go, check out the teaser and first-look photos for “The Interstellar Song Contest” below.
