As you’ve already figured out, there is no Doctor Who Christmas special for 2018. Hopefully you’ve been able to watch the old specials that ran this week. But, with a new Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) comes a new special day. The Doctor will help us ring in the new year this year, and she’ll have to face an enemy that many have been waiting for.

The trailer that was released for the New Year’s special gave a run-down of the danger involved in the episode, but the source was a mystery. The teaser is extremely quick and pretty vague, but one thing is absolutely unmistakable. The Doctor makes reference to “the DNA of the most dangerous creature in the universe.” We see nothing of the creature, but EXTERMINATE is heard at the end of the teaser, and we all know what’s in store. The Daleks are back. And, we finally get to see our new Doctor and her small army of companions face an old foe.

The special, written by Chris Chibnall and directed by Wayne Yip, is titled Resolution. It is a fitting New Year’s title, but could it speak to a different kind of resolution? Is it possible that she could come to some kind of resolution with the Daleks? We need only wait a few days to find out. Check out the New Year’s special December 9 trailer and the revealing new teaser!
The Doctor Who New Year’s special will air on BBC America, January 1st, 8pm ET (5pm PT).
