The Doctor is headed to an all-new dimension. According to Deadline, the long-running sci-fi series Doctor Who will be heading to a new streaming home next year – HBO Max. The show will stream exclusively on the service after its premiere on BBC America. Additionally, when HBO Max launches in 2020, all 11 seasons (the episodes from 2005 to now) will be available for viewing.

The teams over at BBC America and Doctor Who are thrilled with the partnership. Nigel Gaines, Interim President, BBC Studios – Americas, spoke of the potential new fans the show would gain. “As any Doctor Who fan knows, the iconic Tardis is ‘bigger on the inside’ – and it’s a good thing because the Tardis is about to welcome a whole new slew of fans coming to the show through this deal with HBO Max.” Sally de St CroixDoctor Who Global Franchise Director added to the excitement by saying “Doctor Who is a program like no other – an incredibly rich world of stories, packed with adventure, regeneration, heart (two actually) and hope. Our audience is incredibly dedicated and engaged, and we can’t wait to work with HBO Max to tell our stories from across all of time and space.”

Doctor Who isn’t the only BBC Studios show headed to the streaming service. In fact, HBO Max licensed 700 episodes of original BBC content including The Office, Top Gear, Luther and The Honorable Woman. Other series like PureTrigonometryStath Lets FlatsHome and Ghosts are also included in the deal. So the BBC series’ will be cozying up to other massive hits such as Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, Friends, Doom Patrol and more.

This is a surprising move. Maybe it’s surprising because we’ve all gotten used to the BBC shows streaming on BBC America but this feels different. It will be interesting to see if the show genuinely gains new fans or alienates (pun intended) its current fanbase here across the pond.
