Ah, tears and more tears.

Gerard Groves, massive Doctor Who fan and a new production apprentice for the BBC, got the chance to interview his favorite Doctor, Christopher Eccleston, for his new BBC1 drama about autism, The A-Word.

Gerard, who is adorable, is not only a young filmmaker and standup comedian, he is also on the autistic spectrum and spoke to Eccleston about the impact Doctor Who had on his life. As a child he made Doctor Who fan videos called Cat Who, and this is what he told Radio Times:

Back in the day, I did all kinds of different films… I did a series of films as a kid called Cat Who. Basically, due to my lack of available friends who wanted to be in a film on the internet – this was back when it was ‘what the hell’s YouTube, this weird thing? We don’t want to be on the internet’ – I ended up roping my cats in to being the companions to my Doctor Who, so I filmed these cats and added the voices in later.

Eccleston, who was the Doctor for only one season, seems genuinely moved and even mentions he was brought to tears by Gerard’s story and for his courage to be so open about dealing with Aspergers.

It’s a sweet interview that is not just moving, it’s inspiring. To see this kid fulfilling a dream and meeting his hero and for the hero to be gracious and equally moved by this young man, makes for a great interview. It’s also a wonderful example to anyone who struggles with communication and anything else at all, that these things don’t have to hold you back and will most likely make you a more unique and interesting human because you have the drive and passion to focus and persevere.
