Mobile Game Monday: DISNEY SPEEDSTORM

Updated on:

Greetings, friends, and welcome to Mobile Game Monday, where we chat about games you can play on the go. If you like to game on a phone or tablet, this is the place for you. Join us every week as we go on all sorts of adventures.

Disney Speedstorm

Race as your favorite Disney and Pixar characters in Disney Speedstorm by Gameloft. This recently released free-to-play racing game lets you race as everyone from Mickey Mouse to the dastardly villain, Jafar. Choose your favorite character and speed through fun maps like Andy’s Room from Toy Story

Gameplay

The controls for Disney Speedstorm are a major problem for me. Steering is controlled by separate left and right buttons on the bottom of the screen. This setup is incredibly awkward and makes it difficult to control your kart with any sort of precision. After I played a few races using the in-game controls, I almost considered deleting the game.

However, I decided to try it with a controller; this was a game changer. Once I could use the controller thumbstick, it was a much smoother experience, and I won every race afterward.

Directional debacle aside, the rest of the controls are straightforward and smooth enough. Simply tap the buttons to use items and speed boost.

Tracks in Speedstorm are gorgeous and feature Disney destinations from Arendelle to Agrabah. Every track has item boxes that contain temporary skills like a shield or bomb. Anyone who has ever played a kart racing game knows these power-ups can be the difference between winning or losing.

Racers

Speedstorm already offers a great selection of over 60 playable characters, which doesn’t even include crew members. Once you’ve unlocked a character, stay ahead of the pack by using upgrade coins to improve their stats. Every character has five statistics that improve with each upgrade, including top speed, acceleration, handling, boost and combat. Each racer also has a unique skill, like Beast’s Enchanted Rose move, a short roar that stuns nearby racers.

Assign up to four Crew Members to each driver, improving your stats. Crew members are secondary characters like Slinky Dog from Toy Story or Cy-bugs from Wreck-It Ralph.

Modes

World Map is where you will find seasonal races and tournaments. Seasonal races grant limited-time rewards featuring a specific Disney film. The current season, Journey of Emotions, showcases maps and characters from Inside Out.

Limited events is a single-player mode where players complete themed missions to receive special rewards. These events rotate daily or weekly, including the Cup, Specific Racer and Daily Coin Rush.

What would a kart racing game be without the ability to blow your friends up right before the finish line to steal a win? Friendly Race allows you to do just that; join your friends and let the fun begin.

Events and Passes

Disney Speedstorm offers a seasonal pass featuring themed rewards. While some rewards are free, get even more goodies if you purchase the Golden Pass for $9.99. For big spenders, the Golden Bundle offers everything from the Golden Pass plus 15 tiers.

Left are recently unlocked crew members from Inside Out, Nostalgia and Frank and Dave. Right is Fear, also from Inside Out.

This month’s theme is Inside Out to promote the recent release of Inside Out 2. Grab limited-time drivers like Fear and Sadness while you can.

Our Adventure Ends Here

Disney Speedstorm has a lot going for it. The music is exceptional; each map features a cool electronic version of a famous Disney song. Every single map I have played so far is a blast. Not only do they look great, but most maps have their neat little mechanic. For example, Atlantica is underwater, of course, but it feels like you are driving underwater.

Races are quick, usually with only one or two short laps, which means you can play anytime, anywhere. I love the range of characters and am looking forward to seeing what they add next.

Almost everything about Disney Speedstorm is amazing except for the controls. Unfortunately, controls are a very important part of game quality; this one falls short without a controller. Controls aside, this is a great choice for those burnt out on Mario Kart or those die-hard Disney fans.
