Netflix’s Devil May Cry
Born of what was intended to be Resident Evil 4, 2001’s Devil May Cry video game has spawned (see what I did there?) an entirely separate IP with its own style and pacing. With allusions to Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy, the game centers on demon-hunter Dante as he attempts to continue his demon-knight father’s legacy of protecting humanity.

Netflix first announced the production at the 2023 Drop Event with a 30-second intense teaser clip. The eight-episode series will finally debut just a year after the release of the mobile game Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat and six years after Devil May Cry 5 main platform installment.
The new teaser provides a lot more Dante time as he takes on demons of all shapes and temperaments. A skilled mercenary, Dante, in the game, has several weapon choices available to him. However, he most often wields his trusty guns with specially carved bullets … or the magic sword because, well, sometimes the occasion just needs a magic sword.
Keeping It in the Family?
Everything we’ve seen so far has featured Dante being his badass self. But will the series delve into the family dynamics that drive the franchise’s central action? Will he have help from nephew Nero or the mysterious V? One can only assume that evil twin brother Vergil will make an appearance, although the prime baddie in the O.G. Devil May Cry is Mundus, the Demon World ruler.

It Could Be Bunnies
Described as an “urban fantasy action-adventure game,” the Devil May Cry franchise relies on compelling characters and a complex plot to drive the gameplay forward. We can only hope the series retains those elements as it seeks to tell the story without letting viewers shoot or slay anything themselves.
Personally, I just hope they haven’t rebooted Mundus as a rabbit. Seriously.
Devil May Cry premieres in April of 2025 on Netflix. Before you go, check out the official teaser below.
