Not too long ago Bungie included a little tidbit in their weekly regarding a Refer-A-Friend program launching sometime in the near future. I made the assumption it would go live before December and it looks like I was correct, refer-a-friend officially went live on November 23rd.
If you go to Bungie.com, or even start up the game, you are greeted with the splash page declaring the Refer-A-Friend program is now active. On the website, Refer-A-Friend is outlined with three easy steps:
1. Invite Friends
2. Adventure Together
3. Earn Rewards
4. Profit
OK, Bungie didn’t put in step 4, that’s my own addition.
It seems to work like every other Refer-A-Friend program out there. You send an invite coded specifically to you and your account to a friend, and once the person activates their copy of Destiny you are then linked up for exclusive quests and rewards. Please note, you must be on the same platform, Refer-A-Friend will not work on cross platform the same way Destiny players cannot play with players on other platforms.
As for the specifics of the rewards you will reap, let’s take a look, shall we. The most expected bonus is additional XP through something called The Link of Friendship. When you and your friend group together you get bonus XP above and beyond what you would receive if you were questing solo or with a non linked person. Fairly standard stuff.
Furthermore, you and your friend get access to an exclusive quest, A Tale of Two Guardians. Honestly, the title of the quest alone entertains me. The rewards for the quest are as follows:
Elemental Infinite Edge – Sword
EV-34 Vector Infinite – Sparrow
Duo Dance – Dance
High Five – Emote
Infinite Link – Shader
Sign of the Infinate – Emblem
It’s worth noting that all rewards are legendary and can be gained no other way than through the promotion.
Going through the process of inviting someone is fairly simple. Log into your Bungie account on bungie.com. Click “Invite a Friend Today”, choose your platform, watch as your invite specific code is generated, send an email to the victim of your choosing and off you go.
Once your friend accepts the invite, you both log in, form a Fireteam and skip your way over to the Speaker where you start your very own buddy adventure. You can even track your quest progress through your accounts on bungie.com.
As of now, if you have a friend that started Destiny without being invited via Refer-A-Friend, there is a 7-day grace period. Meaning, within the first 7 days of your friend activating the game, you can still link through Refer-A-Friend and gain its benefits. Not sure how long it will last, so jump on it now while you can.
I do have a friend that recently started playing Destiny so I did test out the invite system just to see how everything flows. It’s very easy and straightforward. Unfortunately, since my friend activated Destiny 9 days ago, she was not eligible for the promotion. Ah well, it was worth a shot, I just really want those rewards.
