Destiny Crimson Days

Not all games celebrate Valentine’s Day and, if they do, they are sickly sweet affairs filled with candy, flowers, chocolates, and romance. More than likely floating hearts are involved and maybe cherub looking things, everything is probably splashed with red, pink, and white. All in all, not really events I personally tend to celebrate, but if that’s your cup on tea then, by all means, go for it. However Bungie has now jumped on the Valentine’s Day bandwagon and has done so in a uniquely twisted way.

Starting on February 9th, Destiny will launch Crimson Days, a week long event that celebrates couples, be they friends or something more. The basic theme; grab a friend/lover, form a fireteam, and slaughter your enemies in a special 2v2 event, dubbed Crimson Doubles, all in the name of romance. Or something. Oh who cares if it’s romance, it sounds like fun.

From Bungie’s Weekly Update:

CRIMSON DAYS celebrates two Guardians, united against the competition, watching one another’s backs and becoming legend together. A Crucible Fireteam, forging bonds of teamwork and friendship that even death only strengthens.

If you want to know more, let’s interrogate Senior Designer Leif Johansen.

What inspired the creation of Crimson Days?

Leif: We wanted to develop a small, fun PvP activity that speaks to the themes and emotions of Valentine’s Day. Try that design exercise in your head. What features would you build into a competitive shooter experience to provide a metaphor for going on dates, relationships, and love?

What did you end up with?

Leif: For one week, we’re opening up a Fireteam-Only 2v2 Elimination playlist with a twist: you get a significant buff while your teammate is dead. Having to ask someone to be your Guardian Valentine and being filled with angry vengeance when they get killed are the experiences that I hope will define the event.

Tell us more about the new mechanics. How does it help us to avenge our vanquished partners?

Leif: When your teammate dies, you become “enraged” with the Broken Heart buff. When you find yourself alone in the fight, you gain maximum ratings for Armor, Agility, Recovery, and Weapon Handling speed. Hearing Bungie devs swear vengeance for their beloved Crimson partners during playtests sealed the deal for me.

They had me at Broken Heart buff. In my dark brain, gaining a ridiculous power when your teammate dies is fantastic, especially when the sole purpose of said buff is to help rain vengeance upon your foe.

BROKEN HEART
If your teammate falls to the opposition in Crimson Doubles, you will be infused with the power of Broken Heart. In your vengeful state, you will be faster on the draw and much quicker to recover from any damage you take. Use this boost to avenge your partner and keep your dreams of victory alive. The Broken Heart buff will last until you revive your fallen comrade, until the round ends, or until you fall in combat yourself.

Long and short of it, you go into a berserker rage, mowing down anyone in your path or you die trying.

As with all of Destiny’s events, especially the recent Sparrow Racing League, you get special shaders, consumables, and a chance at some 320 gear just for participating.  This time the gear is ghost shells, done up in special Crimson Day colors which means red with possible sparkles and, uh, chocolate.  I knew they would work chocolate in there somehow.

rewards

Shaxx will have some bounties and a new quest for you when the event launches, it’s all PvP related to Crimson Doubles so just keep that in mind.  Complete the quest and get a shiny new Crimson Days Emblem.

Coming as a surprise to no one, the Eververse will be restocked with Crimson Days themed merchandise.  The usual dances, emotes, maybe kits that contain random drops like shaders and ghost shells.  That last bit isn’t confirmed but they did something similar for both SRL and Festival of the Lost.  Depends on if you want to pay for the extra goodies or if you want to grind away.

As stated before, Crimson Days will kick on on February 9th and conclude on February 16th.  See you on the battlefield, Guardian.
