A first look at Derry Girls Season 3 arrived just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, with a trailer available for fans from U.K. broadcaster Channel 4. Variety released the trailer and an image from Season 3 for fans in the States.

Derry Girls follows Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), her cousin Orla (Louisa Harland) and friends Clare (Bridgerton‘s Nicola Coughlan), Michelle (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell) and Michelle’s English cousin, “The Wee English Fella” James (Dylan Llewellyn). The kids live in 1990s Derry, Ireland, during the Troubles, an ethnic-nationalist conflict spanning nearly 40 years. Despite the armed police and British Army checkpoints everywhere, teenage life continues. Erin and her friends deal with crushes, family drama and the usual high school strife.

The trailer reveals the usual cast will return, including Siobhán McSweeney as the amazingly deadpan — and apparent DeLorean driving — Sister Michael, the girls’ headmistress. The crew’s adventures will take them outside of Derry and the Our Lady Immaculate School to an amusement park with Erin’s family. It looks like they’ll also struggle with college applications and do a lot of shrieking.

The third season of Derry Girls was first confirmed in April 2019, but filming didn’t begin until October 2021. Series creator and writer Lisa McGee confirmed Season 3 was always meant to be the end. She released a statement on Twitter in September 2021, stating:

It was always the plan to say goodbye after three series. Derry Girls is a coming of age story; following five ridiculous teenagers as they slowly … very slowly … start to become adults, while around them the place they call home starts to change too, and Northern Ireland enters a new, more hopeful phase — which was a small, magical window of time.

The trailer didn’t include a specific date, only a “coming soon” tag, but Season 3 will air on Channel 4 before eventually coming to Netflix. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too much longer for more Derry Girls!
