Let’s Break Down the DEMON SLAYER: KIMETSU NO YAIBA Season 3 Teaser

Posters for Demon Slayer Season 3 Love Hashira, Tanjiro and Mist Hashira, three anime releasing in April 2023.

Rejoice, anime fans! We have been blessed with the first trailer for Season 3 of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. The second season, focusing on the Entertainment District arc that just wrapped, followed the exploits of the very flashy Hashira Tengen Uzui. Now, we are looking forward to the future.

If you are not up to date on the newest anime episodes, including Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train or the following arc summarizing the film’s events, consider this your spoiler warning. We will be discussing those events in the rest of the article. If you need to catch up on the series, you can do so on Crunchyroll here!

This trailer is a visual splendor. It is cinematic and carries over the grade-A animation we got in the Entertainment District arc. I hope this indicates the animation quality we can expect for Season 3. I’ll admit I was worried at how quickly the teaser trailer dropped, as a tight turnaround can often be a detriment to the animation process, but the trailer is stunning.

The trailer opens with a film roll, recapping the events of the last two seasons and the movie. As the camera pans over the film reel cells, several voices overlap with clips from the previous two seasons. This builds tension that peaks when we hear Tanjiro’s pleading lines from the movie.

This also shows the impact of The Flame Hashira. Rengouku’s death will not be pushed aside in the next season. The border colors are an interesting detail in this scroll/film roll effect. Notice how one side is pink, and the other is a light blue-green? Coloring and patterns are essential in Demon Slayer, and those note the reintroduction of two important characters to this new arc.

Demon Slayer is an anime about dealing with loss and tragedy, so I’m sure the events surrounding his death will be explored in the coming episodes. Tanjiro has been haunted by his choices in the train arc and his feelings of inadequacy and failure to protect Rengouku that hasn’t been addressed since he confronted the late Hashira’s family.

Part of this is because the following Entertainment District arc events were centered around Uzui, who is too invested in recovering his brides to mourn, and Tanjiro’s relative seclusion from his fellow Demon Slayer Corp members.

Demon Slayer Season 3 Mist Hashira with Love Hashira

The most exciting parts of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba are the mysteries surrounding the organization Tanjiro joins. Even in a world where demon attacks are commonplace, the general public and recruits seem to be as clueless about the organization’s inner workings as the audience is.

The Demon Slayer Season 3 trailer promises to shine a light on at least two more of the remaining seven Hashira and one of the biggest mysteries of the series, the artists behind the infamous weaponry the demon slayers use. That’s right; Season 3 is the Swordsmith Village Arc!

Since the start of the series, there has been a lot of hype surrounding the unique swords the Demon Corps members utilize. Besides being the only thing that effectively kills demons, not just slows them down; there is also the mysterious color-changing quality of the swords.

Tanjiro famously has a black blade, which is said to be an omen of bad luck. In this arc, we will hopefully spend more time with Hotaru, meet more members of the Swordsmith clan and get a better understanding of Tanjiro’s black blade.

Now, the part of the Demon Slayer Season 3 trailer that I’m most nervous about is the TWO Hashira. Each arc has focused on only one of the upper-ranking demon slayers until this point. The Hashira we see in the trailer are the Mist Hashira, Muichiro Tokito and the Love Hashira, Mitsuri Kanroji.

Because we are getting two Hashira for the price of one arc, I imagine we are also in for two upper-level demons to match their strength. There is nothing not to love about love-obsessed Hashira Muichiro, and I’m a little nervous about the heartache we are in for as she joins the action.

We have to discuss Nezuko. The once meek and mild child has become an indispensable asset on the battlefield for Tanjiro. When his back is against the wall, she always evens the playing field and often tips the scale of the battle in their favor.

The growth of Tanjiro’s strength is highlighted in the previous arcs, but we believe Nezuko gets a power boost this season. Her big brother has been intent on protecting her, treating her like a helpless child, but she only needs shielding from the sun. We are calling it now — Nezuko will get her fleshed-out mini-arc this season.
