He’s Back, Baby

There aren’t enough expletives in the English language to express the excitement of seeing the first trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine (once upon a time known as Deadpool 3,) drop during that game that Taylor Swift flew in from Japan to watch.

Marvel’s Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) is back for another wacky, over-the-top adventure. In a fun role reversal, he’s got top billing over Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) this time, where fans will recall the Merc with a Mouth made his cinematic debut in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine as an annoying but minor side character.

But wait, there’s more to this than just an R-rated romp through mutants, mercs and mayhem. We open on Wade Wilson’s birthday celebration, where his candle-blowing wish somehow calls a platoon of Time Variance Authority (TVA) goons to his door.

“WTF?” you ask.

Yes, indeedy. This Wade/Deadpool variant is captured by Loki‘s own TVA and offered the chance to be a “hero among heroes” by TVA suit Paradox (Matthew Macfadyen).

The Deadpool 3 logo in black and red with three Wolverine claw marks rent through it on a black background.

Being Deadpool, his grasp of the situation is both ridiculous and sublime.

Marvel Jesus

Rather than feeling daunted by the greatness being thrust upon him, Wade Wilson accepts and understands he has been chosen to reshape the MCU in his own image as “Marvel Jesus,” the cinematic Messiah.

Donning the suit with what I can only assume is an incredibly flexible body double — Mr. Reynolds, feel free to contact me directly to correct that assumption — Deadpool dives into a melee montage of battles with what appears to be both mutant variants (which seems redundant) and TVA forces.

Besides Macfadyen’s Paradox, we catch sight of dozens of familiar characters, including life partner Vanessa (Morena Baccarin); friends Blind Al (Leslie Uggams) and Dopinder (Karan Soni); mutants Pyro (Aaron Stanford), Yukio (Shioli Kutsuna) and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand); and even Avengers like Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth).

So, what is Wade’s mission? Who has decided Deadpool needed to have the ability to travel through the multiverse at will?

Even the Trickster God, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), wouldn’t go this far for a giggle, would he? I mean, you’d think his new responsibilities would’ve settled his prankster bent down a bit, but some folx never change.

Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool in the original Deadpool movie. He's pantomiming a gasp.

How will Wolverine figure into all of this? We don’t know, and I don’t really think we care.

Raunchy and Heartfelt — That’s the Brand

Deadpool movies are cinematic shock and awe. Predictably unpredictable. Always raunchy, yet strangely heartfelt. Eternally pushing the limits of the audience expectations and the tolerance of the Hays Code.

This first trailer promises insane fight scenes, fourth-wall demolition and jokes you will never be able to repeat in front of your children. Or your parents.

So, yeah, it’s 1,000 percent Deadpool, and we are so here for it.
