DC’s Latino Hero BLUE BEETLE Has a Film in Development

We have another DC superhero on the way! Announced today by TheWrap, we learned that a Blue Beetle film is currently in development with a promising team behind the scenes. With this announcement comes the excitement of saying that we’ll be having our first starring Latino superhero film. It feels good to say that, doesn’t it?

Here’s what we know about the project so far. Mexican-born writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer has been hired to write the script for the Mexican-American superhero. Dunnet-Alcocer is known for his scripts of the Scarface remake and Miss Bala. Producer Zev Foreman will also be joining the team. No word yet on directors or stars but we’re going to keep our fingers crossed that the rest of the team is Latino.

As for Blue Beetle, there’s 3 different incarnations of the character but the most famous one is Jaime Reyes. First introduced in 2006, the Mexican-American teen became a hero when an alien (or magic, depending on the story) Scarab fused itself to the teen’s spine. While originally Reyes had little control over the powers he was given, he eventually learned to work with the Scarab and use the powerful armor to his advantage.

While Blue Beetle won’t be the first Latino hero to grace our screens, this will be the first leading role. DC will even have two Latino heroes out before Blue Beetle makes it on screen – including El Diablo from Suicide Squad and Renee Montoya from the upcoming Birds of Prey. But representation matters! It’s even more important that Reyes is a teen – giving children a better vehicle to see themselves in. Blue Beetle is such a fun character and has become more prominent over the past decade. He’s kind of like Spider-Man for DC, though they’re not completely related (don’t crucify me). So it will be great to see what they do with this character. I’m very much hoping it doesn’t end up on WB’s chopping block.

What do you think about a Blue Beetle film in development? Are you excited like us or holding your excitement in due to WB’s changing schedule? Let us know! Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more updates on this film! The Blue Beetle film currently doesn’t have a release date.
