Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have their next project lined up. The pair are set to helm sci-fi drama The Three-Body Problem for Netflix, as reported by Deadline. It will be a TV adaptation of author Liu Cixin‘s book trilogy of the same name. Benioff and Weiss struck a massive overall deal with the streaming giant last year.
Now, Benioff and Weiss will have quite the impressive producing team at their disposal. Rian Johnson, director of Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi and Knives Out, is set to produce. Additionally, AMC’s The Terror: Infamy co-creator Alexander Woo will join the fray. Brad Pitt‘s company Plan B will contribute as well. Lastly, actress Rosamund Pike will produce via her production company Primitive Streak. Avengers, assemble, anyone?
The Three-Body Problem consists of three novels — Remembrance of Earth’s Past, The Dark Forest, and Death’s End. Remembrance of Earth’s Past tells the story of Ye Wenjie who helps aliens invade Earth following her father’s death at the hands of the Red Guards in the Cultural Revolution. Different factions of our world cultivate ways in which they can welcome their new extra terrestrial overlords.
Netflix VP of Original Series Drama Peter Friedlander had this to say regarding The Three-Body Problem:
Although it may seem like a familiar premise — the story of humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization — Chinese author Liu Cixin’s ability to interweave science with fiction made his vision of the future and extra-terrestrial contact feel more realistic than any other science fiction I’ve read,” he said. “At the same time, I was also drawn in by the story of all of humanity vulnerable to the same external threat and how this both unifies and divides humans. Since my earliest days at Netflix working on series like Black Mirror and Sense8, I’ve sought out stories and POVs that are singular. This story felt singular, special — and eminently relatable.

My humble opinion? While the last season of Game of Thrones was disappointing to say the least, I’m curious to see what Benioff and Weiss will do with The Three-Body Problem. They have an incredible creative team behind the wheel, so I’ve no doubt the production values will be nothing short of spectacular.
