We may have a new cast member on our hands for the live action adaptation of The Little Mermaid. According to Variety, Hamilton star Daveed Diggs has currently entered talks to join the adaptation as one vivacious crustacean.

Should Diggs join the cast, he’ll be alongside Halle Bailey as Ariel, Melissa McCarthy as Ariel’s “evil aunt” Ursula, and Javier Bardem on board to play King Triton. As for the crew, Rob Marshall (Chicago, Mary Poppins Returns) will be helming the film with David Magee taking over writing. Diggs would also be (somewhat) reunited with Hamilton co-star Lin-Manuel Miranda who will be teaming up with original composer Alan Menken to create new music for the film.

In the original animated film, Sebastian was a Jamaican crab with a passion for singing. He was also the royal adviser to King Triton. Sebastian was also the one to sing two of the most memorable songs from the film – “Under the Sea” and “Kiss the Girl”. With Diggs’ talent, we’re going to get a wonderful rendition of “Under the Sea”, I can feel it. The biggest question I have is – are they going to use a photo realistic crab in the film? Not sure I can see it

While he hasn’t been officially cast, how do you feel about him stepping in to the Disney boat? Let us know! Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more casting news. Disney’s The Little Mermaid will enter production in 2020.
