The latest trailer for 20th Century Fox’s last X-Men film, Dark Phoenix premiered during the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday night. Fallon’s guest and Dark Phoenix co-star Jessica Chastain presented the trailer and gave a little information about her character’s motives in the film.
In the new trailer, Jean Gray (Sophie Turner) and her fear of her new powers. She cries alone in the rain asking herself why she made herself do something to her friend. Which friend is she talking about. It could be Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) who at some point attempts to calm Jean down. Jean reacts by telepathically pushing Mystique away. There is a funeral in there somewhere, so does Jean kill Mystique?
Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and the rest of the X-men are cautious of Jean. There is some debate about whether or not she is too far gone for them to help. All of the X-men are fighting Jean at some point in the film. We get to see Jean slowly emerge into the Phoenix who appears to have no emotional attachment to any of the X-Men.
Out of this World
Based on the Marvel 1980’s comic book series, the Dark Phoenix centers on the story of Jean Gray’s transformation to the Phoenix. Jean’s new found power is from another world and there are forces out there who wish to find it and use it for other purposes. That’s where Chastain’s character Smith comes in.
Smith appears to be helping Jean embrace and control her powers. According to THR, Chastain told Fallon that her character wants to harness Jean’s power for herself. Fallon asked if she used her powers for good or evil. Chastain replied, “Well I think the powers are for good, but others might think it’s evil. I mean, I get to beat up a lot of X-Men in the movie… maybe kill some? Maybe someone lives, maybe someone dies.”
Dark Phoenix also stars Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Alexandra Shipp, Tye Sheridan and Kodi Smit-McPhee. Simon Kinberg wrote and directed the film. Kinberg also produces with Hutch Parker, Lauren Shuler Donner, and Todd Hallowell. Watch the latest trailer below.
Dark Phoenix premiers in theaters on June 7.
