For those of you excited to see Dark Phoenix this year, we have some disappointing news for you. According to THR, the film has been pushed back. A few other films have been moved around as well, including New Mutants. So what’s the cause of this change?

Sadly, nothing has been stated as to why the film’s release date changed. But Dark Phoenix has moved into a prime release position, moving from November 2nd of this year to February 14th 2019. That weekend has been large successes for the likes of Deadpool and this year’s smash hit Black Panther. So it makes sense for Fox to try that slot again. Will February take over as the next “summer blockbuster” slot? Doubtful. But it’s a good move for Dark Phoenix to be there as competition is less intense.

New Mutants has also been moved, though staying in the same year, from February 22nd, 2019 for August 2nd, 2019. I would imagine that the superhero horror flick will fill in the lull between the summer and winter season of comic book movies. My only guess is that the film wants to try to get the biggest opening it can, opening it a day early to try to get the Valentine’s crowd. Can’t blame them for that. But will people spend their Valentine’s weekend watching an X-Men film? We’ll have to wait and see how the numbers turn in.
