The world got it’s first taste of the upcoming Dark Phoenix film last night. Premiering on The Late, Late Show with James Corden, the trailer lays out the story we’re expected to see, introduces some new characters, and brings the continuing feud Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Magento (Michael Fassbender). We learn that Jean (Sophie Turner) is getting stronger and more confused – making her a very dangerous threat.

The trailer starts with a younger Jean Grey, asking mockingly if Charles is going to “fix” her. Charles lets her know that she’s not broken, however he’s done something to her to attempt to keep her stable and safe. Jean, getting frustrated with her lack of answers, turns to Magento for help. Everyone is blaming Charles as Jean goes rampant with her powers, throwing helicopters around, smashing police cars. And though they are horrified, Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) reminds the team that she’s still their friend and have to save her from herself.

There’s a lot of action in this trailer and more of the plot than I expected. The Dark Phoenix storyline is one that is highly regarded by fans. One, some fans have complained, that has never been properly done outside of comics before. Will this be the film to break that curse? My biggest question out of this is – who is the X-Men that died? Has Jean killed them? Fingers crossed it’s not Quicksilver (Evan Peters), he’s been the best thing about these films! I’m very curious to see how their story plays out.

Check out the trailer (and poster!) below and let us know what you think. Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more X-Men news. The film is written and directed by Simon Kinberg. It stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain.

In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

Dark Phoenix rises from the ashes and debuts in theaters February 14th, 2019.
