Highlights
- The trailer for Dark Matter, a new sci-fi series from Apple TV+ is based on the novel of the same name by Blake Crouch.
- The series stars Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly as a married couple caught up in a dimension-jumping nightmare.
- Dark Matter begins streaming on Apple TV+ in May.
Someone (maybe someone who writes for this website) should probably do a piece analyzing why, at this moment in history, we seem to have an endless appetite for sci-fi about people accidentally jumping between parallel universes. Because between Constellation, Counterpart, Tenet, Dark, Devs (and probably a bunch I can’t think of right now), we seem to be very focused on what would happen if we met another version of ourselves, and that other self was kind of a jerk. Or we’re the jerk. Or both. Well whatever the reason, we can add Dark Matter to the canon.

Kidnapping Yourself
Based on the novel of the same name by Blake Crouch (who also penned Wayward Pines) the trailer for the the new Apple TV+ series introduces us to Jason (Joel Edgerton) who tells us he’s a scientist, with a beautiful wife Daniella (Jennifer Connelly) and a happy family. It looks like he’s got it all on lock, until a scary dude in a mask sticks him with a hypodermic.
When he wakes up everything’s changed. He’s got a different beautiful wife, his bartender doesn’t recognize him and his best friend thinks he’s crazy. What follows looks like a mystery involving a device that allows one to examine all of the alternate lives and the revelation that poor Jason may have kidnapped himself.

Another Slate of Stars
As with other shows on Apple TV+, Dark Matter seems like a premium affair with a slate of big-name actors doing feature film work on the small screen. Along with Edgerton and Connelly, the show features turns by Alice Braga (City of God, I Am Legend), Jimmi Simpson (Westworld), and Dayo Okeniyi (The Hunger Games).
The author Blake Crouch is listed as the creator, executive producer, and Showrunner and seems to have been intimately involved with the series. This differs from the TV adaptation of his Wayward Pines trilogy.

Add It To The List
Dark Matter is just the latest in a growing slate of high-end science fiction shows on the platform including, Foundation, Silo, and Severance. While other platforms seem to be cutting back on the big spending, Apple continues to hold down the “spare no expense” corner of the streaming world. Dark Matter drops May 8th on Apple TV+.
