Sony’s ready to expand its Marvel universe! As reported by Deadline, Dakota Johnson will join the entertainment industry’s growing superhero roster in Madame Web as the titular character. The announcement comes hot on the heels of the record-breaking success of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Deadline reveals that S.J. Clarkson will helm the project while Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless penned the script.
Madame Web, a.k.a. Cassandra Webb, first burst onto the comic scene in The Amazing Spider-Man #210, published in November 1980. Created by Denny O’Neil and John Romita Jr., Madame Web’s depicted as an older woman with myasthenia gravis, connected to a spiderweb-like life support system.

Madame Web’s abilities include clairvoyance and precognition. She’s usually a supporting character in the Spidey comics, and she never physically fights villains due to her medical condition.
Since Johnson is relatively young, it’s possible the Madame Web Powers That Be might go a different route concerning the storyline.
Regardless, it’s about time Sony got a female-led superhero property under its belt. Spider-Man: No Way Home rose through the cinematic ranks as the biggest film of 2021, raising $1.7 billion in global sales. Sony also fared well with Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which amassed more than $500 million worldwide.
Johnson is a Sundance Film Festival favorite, coming off the success of two critically-lauded features with Cooper Raiff‘s Cha Cha Real Smooth and Tig Notaro/Stephanie Allynne‘s Am I OK? She can be seen next in this year’s romantic drama Persuasion, based on Jane Austen‘s novel of the same name, opposite Henry Golding.
I’m curious to see what Johnson brings to the table but significantly more intrigued about Sony’s direction with this character. Perhaps it’s more of an origin story because of Johnson’s age?
