D23 EXPO 2022: Niantic Announces MARVEL World of Heroes Game

The Disney & Marvel Games Showcase at D23 Expo 2022 announced that Marvel Entertainment and Niantic Games are teaming up for a new augmented reality game, MARVEL World of Heroes, available in 2023. As a person who is still absolutely obsessed with Pokémon Go, I nearly fell out of my seat at the announcement, especially because Marvel fans will be able to play as their favorite mutant (that means Scarlet Witch).

In 2018, the developer behind Pokémon Go, Niantic Games, announced that it had acquired Seismic Games, the studio comprised of developers formerly from Electronic Arts and Activision. Seismic was behind many licensed titles, including the mobile role-playing game Marvel: Strike Force. With Niantic’s acquisition of Seismic Games, the video game developers would work together to expand into Niantic’s AR space with all-new, all-different experiences. With the D23 announcement that Marvel was venturing into the AR space, Niantic is finally taking full advantage of the acquisition.

Developed in collaboration with Niantic and Marvel Entertainment, MARVEL World of Heroes will allow you to create your own superhero identity and team up with your favorite Marvel characters in the real world, with Niantic promising a diverse range of avatars available to players. “I think MARVEL World of Heroes is all about delivering on that fantasy of becoming a Marvel superhero in the real world,” said Niantic during the Disney & Marvel Games Showcase panel. “I am just excited to be able to facilitate that fantasy and activate the community [of cosplayers at cons].”

The AR game will soon be entering a soft launch and will be available in limited markets for beta testing soon. MARVEL World of Heroes will launch globally on mobile devices in 2023. Players can pre-register now at marvelworldofheroes.com.
