Crunchyroll has acquired international distribution rights for the English dub of Suzume, or Suzume no Tojimari as it is also known, with plans to bring it to American audiences. This is excellent news for anime fans. As the independently operated joint venture between Sony Pictures Entertainment and Japan’s Aniplex, Crunchyroll’s theatrical team has been behind most of the best-performing anime films, including fan favorite Jujutsu Kaisen 0.

The first major casting announcement is Nichole Sakura for the titular role of Suzume. Sakura has most famously starred as Cloud 9 employee Cheyenne in the sitcom Superstore, which ran for six seasons. Since then, she’s also starred in Hulu’s sitcom Maggie as well as series like Ghosts and Shameless. She’s lent her voice to animated projects like Central Park, Beavis and Butt-Head and Robot Chicken, so voice acting is not a new avenue for her.
Suzume is a new film by Makoto Shinkai, the visionary director of Your Name and Weathering with You. On the other side of the doors is a time in its entirety. Suzume is a coming-of-age story for the 17-year-old protagonist, Suzume, set in various disaster-stricken locations across Japan, where she must close the doors, causing devastation.

This film has been on my radar since the trailer dropped a few months ago. The visuals and animation are stunning, backing up the beautiful soundtrack we hear in the preview. I’m very excited to see Suzume get an English dub and will catch it in theaters.
