Welcome to Tavern Talk Thursday! We are expanding! What started as a column dedicated to chatting with members of the TTRPG community is growing to talk about all things TTRPG. We aim to continue sharing all the things we love about the community and all the content within. So, consider this a little peek into our favorite worlds and creators as we explore everything we love.
Last year, Critical Role announced its acquisition of the sci-fantasy podcast series Midst through its development and production company, Metapigeon. The podcast was a semi-improvised audio drama by three unreliable, playfully omniscient and fully anonymous narrators. And it was incredible. It already excelled in its unique storytelling style, but with Critical Role’s backing, it only continued to grow and thrive. And now they are back with their next adventure, Moonward: A Midst Roleplaying Story.

Everything We Know About Moonward: A Midst Roleplaying Story
Critical Role and the production studio Third Person are coming together to bring us Moonward: A Midst Roleplaying Story. The four-part miniseries will feature Marisha Ray and Liam O’Brien alongside Sara Wile and Matt Roen, who are led by the enigmatic Xen. This is a standalone story set on an expedition to uncover the remnants of Midst’s destroyed moon. Xen recently shared, “We’re thrilled, over the moon, you might even say, to return to our gaming origins with Moonward and tell a new Midst story in one of our most favorite formats.”

And while the crew is returning to their roots in gaming, they don’t plan to let go of all the exciting things they have come to love. Moonward will continue the legacy of experimental storytelling and deliver an immersive experience for listeners. This offers listeners a front-row seat to see how Third Person brings their audio dramas to life by combining live audio, music, lighting effects, and more. And they don’t plan on stopping there. Alongside Critical Role, Third Person wants to continue testing innovative storytelling’s bounds.

Wile has shared that “Midst has always been about play and experimentation. We’re honored to have this opportunity to adapt our storytelling style into a new medium with Critical Role, and we hope people will find it as fun to watch as we did to create!” And experiment, they will. While the trailer doesn’t give away much of the story that is about to unfold, it does give viewers a better idea of how their use of live music, audio, lighting effects and more will be used in conjunction with the storytelling itself.
When Does It Begin?
Moonward: A Midst Roleplaying Story will drop its first episode on Wednesday, August 7, 2024. Viewers can find it on Critical Role’s Twitch and YouTube channels, along with Midst’s YouTube channel. It will also be available in podcast form via Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Future episodes will then be released weekly on Wednesdays. Are you excited to dive into this new adventure?
