A Crazy Rich Asians sequel is officially in development. Warner Bros. announced they are moving forward after the film earned $35.3 million over a five day opening.  The Hollywood Reporter originally broke the news, saying the studio has not officially greenlighted the movie, but the studio is optimistic about the sequel. Screenwriters Adele Lim and Peter Chiarelli will return to pen the sequel.

The movie is based on a book of the same title by Kevin KwanCrazy Rich Asians is part of a trilogy that includes China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People ProblemsCrazy Rich Asians the movie has made quite an impact on movie goers. It is the first major American studio film to feature an all Asian cast. The last was the 1993 hit, The Joy Luck Club. This will be the first time a studio has invested in a sequel for this demographic.  


The first movie focused on Rachel Chu’s (Constance Wu) introduction in to the lavish and culturally rich world of her boyfriend Nick Young’s (Henry Golding) family in Singapore. Director Jon M. Chu cleverly teased a sequel at the end of the movie. Spoilers beware! In the mid-credit scene, Nick’s cousin Astrid (Gemma Chan) is seen giving a flirty glance to an unknown character (Harry Shum Jr.). Book readers know the unknown character as Charlie Wu, Astrid’s first love.

The current plan is to bring back the same cast and crew for the sequel. The second book, China Rich Girlfriend, focuses on Rachel’s search for her father as well as Astrid quest to find love. Both story lines are compelling and bring two very different Asian woman to the forefront of the story.
