Good morning, my neighbors! Amazon hath blessed us with a resplendent Coming 2 America trailer on this fine Tuesday. It showcases the many faces of stars Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall.
Now, in the trailer, Jaffe Joffer (James Earl Jones) is on his deathbed in Zamunda. Akeem (Murphy) would be next in line to the throne, except there’s another potential heir. He discovers that he has a son named Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler) who resides in Queens, New York. This means Akeem and Semmi (Hall) are making the trek back to America after 32 years. “Oh hell no, Your Majesty!” Semmi exclaims. Frankly, I don’t blame him for his reaction. I wouldn’t want to come here right now either.
Then, we see a glitzy flash of the major player names in Coming 2 America. Of course, a trip to Queens wouldn’t be complete with a pit stop at the barbershop. “It’s Kunta Kinte and Ebola!” we hear as the pair enter the establishment. Admittedly, that line made me cackle. More barbs are passed back and forth, and I can already tell this sequel will be worth the hype.

But that’s not all! This trailer boasts a flurry of characters played by both Murphy and Hall. It’s like Orphan Black without the clones and Toronto and … the science? Okay, so it’s not really like Orphan Black. But I’m always in awe when actors portray multiple characters in movies and TV shows. It takes a lot of skill, and thankfully Murphy and Hall are comedy legends. Oh, and Sexual Chocolate? Let’s just say the band is back and better than ever.
Coming 2 America looks like a blast — a whimsical trip down memory lane. A big plate of comfort food. While I wish we were getting the finished product this month, I’ll take a few months from now as an acceptable substitute.
Coming 2 America stars Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Jermaine Fowler, Leslie Jones, Shari Headley, KiKi Layne, Teyana Taylor, Garcelle Beauvais, Tracy Morgan, Rick Ross, Wesley Snipes and James Earl Jones. It’s directed by Craig Brewer with a script from Kenya Barris and David Sheffield.
