Will Smith meets love, time, and death or his friends decide to drive him to the edge of madness in Collateral Beauty. Either way, it should be an interesting movie.
When a successful New York ad executive suffers a personal tragedy and retreats from life, his friends devise a drastic plan to reach him before he loses everything. Pushing him to the very edge, they force him to confront the truth in surprising and profoundly human ways.
When I first watched the trailer I thought it may be an interesting twist on A Christmas Carol, but instead of past, present, and future we have love, time, and death. I was on board. Then I read the official synopsis and that has me wondering if it’s a whimsical tale or if this all star cast of Smith’s friends decide to feed his grief and psychosis and drive him over the edge.
I’m not sure which version I’m hoping for, on the one hand the Christmas Carol twist is amusing and, it’s a Holiday movie, so it would make sense. On the other hand, watching people drive their friend slowly mad could be fun as well. Yes, I’m a bit twisted.
At any rate, I’m on board. The cast alone would get me into the theater, Will Smith (Suicide Squad, Concussion), Edward Norton (Birdman), Keira Knightley (The Imitation Game), Michael Peña (The Martian), Naomie Harris (Spectre), Jacob Latimore (The Maze Runner), with Oscar winners Kate Winslet (The Reader, Steve Jobs) and Helen Mirren (The Queen, Trumbo).
Collateral Beauty hits theaters December 16, 2016.
