She’s back! Variety reports that Christina Ricci will make her triumphant return to The Addams Family universe for Netflix’s Wednesday. Ricci portrayed the titular character in the iconic films from the ’90s. The Tim Burton-helmed series stars Jenna Ortega in the lead role.

As per Netflix’s usual, details regarding Ricci’s mystery part are under lock and key. We know Ricci won’t play an older version of Wednesday.

Wednesday is an eight-episode show shining a spotlight on Gomez and Morticia’s death-obsessed daughter. Here’s the synopsis for the series courtesy of Netflix Media:

The series is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy. Wednesday’s attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore.

The Netflix series hails from Al Gough and Miles Millar, with Burton directing all eight episodes. Besides Ortega and Ricci, Luis Guzmán stars as Gomez Addams, Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams, Jamie McShane as Sheriff Donovan Galpin, Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair, Joy Sunday as Bianca Barclay, Gwendoline Christie as Larissa Weems, Riki Lindhome as Dr. Valerie Kinbott, Percy Hynes White as Xavier Thorpe, Hunter Doohan as Tyler Galpin and Georgie Farmer as Ajax Petropolus.

Thora Birch also appears on Wednesday as Tamara Novak but unfortunately exited before production wrapped for personal reasons.

Cartoonist Charles Addams created Wednesday and her family in 1938 in a series of unrelated single-panel cartoons. Then, in 1964, The Addams Family ran for two seasons on ABC as a family sitcom, with an animated series hot on its heels in 1973.

But the ’90s movies, The Addams Family and Addams Family Values, skyrocketed the franchise to new heights. A live-action musical took Broadway by storm in the following years, along with an animated film reboot.

I’m excited to see how they incorporate Ricci into the narrative, especially since she won’t portray an older Wednesday Addams. Regardless, we’re in for a macabre, Gothic treat.

Wednesday premieres sometime this year on Netflix.
