Say it ain’t so! In a recent article in The New York Times, actor Chris Evans revealed he doesn’t plan to return to the MCU. After the currently untitled Avengers 4, Evans will be hanging up his supersuit. But before we cry too much, there’s hope still and frankly, he has a good reason.
In the piece, there was a few mentions of his role in the MCU as Captain America. He’s become one of the faces of the franchise and made the character a fan favorite. Appearing in 8 films (that’s one less than Robert Downey Jr.), he’s become essential. The article noted that he filmed both films back to back last April – and that’s when the bomb is dropped. He’s leaving the MCU.
Last year, he filmed back-to-back the final two Marvel movies for which he is under contract — “Avengers: Infinity War,” due in April, and a sequel planned for next year. For now, he has no plans to return to the franchise (“You want to get off the train before they push you off,” he said), and expects that planned reshoots in the fall will mark the end of his tenure in the familiar red, white and blue super suit.

Evans has been locked into some serious Marvel contracts, since 2011 he’s been on the hook for whatever appearance they needed from him. That includes cameos for Thor: The Dark World and Spider-Man: Homecoming. And while filming the two Avengers films, he signed onto for his Broadway debut in Lobby Hero. He deserves a much needed break from the MCU, though it will never be the same without him.
Now discussion will open up as to whether Falcon, Bucky, or someone else would take up the mantle but they may just shift focus to our new characters. Which, I would prefer in all honesty and seems like they plan to do with the MCU Yearbook video. It may sound childish but Chris Evans is Captain America, and we shouldn’t replace him. Now we don’t know if his leaving includes a character death but I’m hoping not. Since he’s not guaranteed to die, there’s room for him to return. And it’s the MCU, there’s always a chance, especially given that he’s said in the past he would be open to returning.
What do you think of Chris Evans leaving the MCU? Do you think Captain American will die in the upcoming Avengers films? Let us know! Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more Marvel news.
