Praise be to the Marvel gods! We learned from Variety that Chinaka Hodge has been tapped to serve as the head writer for Disney Plus’s Ironheart! It was announced in December for Disney Investor Day that actress Dominique Thorne will play the titular role.
Now, Ironheart tells the story of Riri Williams (Thorne), “a genius inventor and the creator of the most advanced suit of armor since Iron Man.” Ironheart made its comic book debut in 2016 as the brainchild of writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Mike Deodato. Williams is a 15-year-old MIT student who reverse engineers Tony Stark’s famous suit for a heroic look all her own.
Inevitably, Stark acknowledges her incredible engineering prowess and urges her to pursue a superhero career.
Hodge is a screenwriter, poet, educator and playwright. She wrote her first short film, entitled Miles Away, in 2011. She went on to serve as executive story editor for Apple TV Plus’s anthology series Amazing Stories, which starred Dylan O’Brien among a bevy of performers. Later, Hodge was a staff writer for TNT’s Daveed Diggs-led sci-fi outing Snowpiercer.
As for her poetic endeavors, Hodge has published two books thus far: Dated Emcees and For Girls with Hips: Collected Poems and Writings. Additionally, her written plays include Mirrors in Every Corner and Chasing Mehserle. Hodge is a founding member of The Getback, a hip-hop collective, alongside Diggs.
Marvel has quite a few irons in the Disney Plus fire these days. WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier were smashing successes for the entertainment juggernaut. Loki and Hawkeye are set to debut this year. Other shows coming down the pipeline include She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, Secret Invasion, Moon Knight and a Wakanda series.
Personally, I’m stoked that we’re getting an Ironheart show. Hodge is a prolific writer who’ll undoubtedly carve out an epic, expansive installment in the Marvel sphere.
