There is some casting news from Netflix’s upcoming Chilling Adventures of Sabrina series. It has been reported that Miranda Otto (Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Homeland) and Richard Coyle (Covert Affairs, The Collection) have been added to the show.
TVLine has revealed that Otto will play Zelda Spellman, Sabina’s aunt. Here’s her official description: “Proud and devout, Zelda believes there is no greater honor than serving the Dark Lord as a member of the Church of Night. She is the family’s disciplinarian, fiercely protective of Sabrina and very much Cain to Hilda’s Abel.”
Based on the description, she will be a perfect fit for the role. If you have not seen her in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Homeland, or 24: Legacy then you might be missing out on her superb range. She can be gentle and intimidating, and it sounds like she will be a force to be dealt with in the new series.
Next, Deadline has reported that Richard Coyle has been cast as the villain Father Blackwood, High Priest of the Church of Night and the Dean of the Academy of the Unseen Arts. He will have a “terrifying dark agenda” that will put him at odds with Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) and other members of the coven.
Coyle has appeared in a number of shows and if you’ve seen him in The Collection, then you can see how he will possibly fit into the role of Father Blackwood. He can definitely bring an interesting Professor Snape vibe to the show albeit a little more sinister and not at all endearing.
Otto and Coyle join Shipka (Sabrina), Lucy David (Aunt Hilda), Jaz Sinclair (Rosalind), Michelle Gomez (Mary Wardell) and Chance Perdomo (Ambrose). The show is being helmed by Riverdale’s Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, with Greg Berlanti serving as one of the Executive Producers.
