EW was able to divulge a small bit of information regarding Chewie and Maz. While it’s almost sad news, there’s some hope along with it. Let’s learn where Chewie and Maz are in when we find them in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Chewie is, well, grieving. He lost is best friend of a long, long time. Because of this, he’s more volatile than usual. And no one wants to mess with a Wookiee. Rian Johnson assures fans that we won’t be seeing a depressed Chewie, just one that’s angrier than usual.

Chewie’s doing all right. It’s tough. It was obviously a big loss for him, but, you know, he’s Chewie. He’s resilient. He’s got broad Wookiee shoulders, and he also has a new mission. He’s got Rey, and she’s someone that Han, to a certain extent, handed the keys to. So I think that that helps. …If Chewie was just unemployed and sitting at home, things might be a little rougher, but he’s got a task to focus on.

That task, of course, helping Rey save the universe as he did with Han. It’s going to be hard to see Chewie without Han, if I’m being honest. While I don’t want to see him pass, it would be nice if he could help them save the day and return home. We’ll have to see. It’s also worth noting that Joonas Suotamo has taken over acting as Chewie full time. Health conditions for Peter Mayhew have prevented him from returning, but he’ll always be Chewie to us.

As for Maz, her small appearance in The Force Awakens has gotten even smaller. Which is really unfortunate. We need more female characters out there and Maz is so interesting with her seemingly endless knowledge. It would be nice to see more of her. But, according to Johnson, she will be integral for information, or so the article implies. While Johnson doesn’t make a comment himself about her role outside of it being smaller, he was happy to work with Lupita Nyong’o. We can only hope for more Maz.

What do you think of the small role for Maz and Chewie moving on? Let us know! Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more Star Wars news. The Last Jedi soars into theaters December 15th.
