The Beauty and the Beast promotion has been non-stop these past few weeks and we now have even more things to talk about! Namely, Disney has released the Ariana Grande and John Legend cover of the titular song. And it’s…okay. While both singers are talented, this cover comes off as fairly bland.
The song was written by lyricist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken for the animated 1991 film. Angela Lansbury sings the song in the film as her character, Mrs. Potts. Though she was apprehensive about singing it, she nailed it in one take. However, Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson recorded a “radio” version to include on the film’s soundtrack. This cover will (hopefully) be the same.

This new take on the song is actually a bit cheesy. It sounds like a karaoke version of the music. Both Grande and Legend sound okay but the music is just awful and they just seem to vocalize most of the time instead of singing the words. I may be biased in thinking nothing will come close to Lansbury’s performance, but this production is just lazy. It’s disappointing, really.
