As of Wednesday, April 26, 2023, a Change.org petition in support of the potential Star Trek: Picard spinoff Star Trek: Legacy has passed 32,000 signatures. The petition, which specifically calls for Legacy to be helmed by Picard season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas, was initially begun two months ago.

However, since the conclusion of Picard season 3, interest in Legacy has continued to climb. According to a report from TrekMovie.com, the petition was at 27,000 signatures on Monday, April 24, 2023. In a note included on the petition, it is observed that it will become “one of the top signed on Change.org” when it reaches 35,000 signatures.

Trekkies first heard Legacy mentioned by Matalas in a Tweet on March 22, 2023. Responding to a fan, Matalas wrote: “In case you’re wondering, Legacy is what I’d call a spin-off show from Picard. A 25th Century show that explores the Last Generation and the Next…” In the intervening time, the Picard season finale, entitled “The Last Generation,” has added an additional dimension to the language of the Tweet.

Since Star Trek: Discovery‘s upcoming fifth season will be its last, Paramount+ has two live-action Star Trek shows in production. The first is the ongoing Star Trek: Strange New Worlds which has been confirmed for season 3. The second is Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, which was recently announced and is currently in preproduction. Also in development is Star Trek: Section 31, a greenlit live-action streaming movie event.

In a quote given to FoxLA, Alex Kurtzman stated that the demand for Legacy has been “heard loud and clear.” However, sustained demand is the only surefire way to ensure the Picard spinoff makes it to the screen. You can add your signature to the Change.org petition here, as more than 200 additional Trekkies have done since I began writing this article.
