CBS All Access is doubling, tripling, quadrupling down on the Star Trek universe. They are gearing up for the sophomore season of Star Trek: Discovery, they’ve launched a series of shorts as companion pieces to Discovery’s second season called Star Trek: Short Treks, they’ve started their journey to bring Jean-Luc Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart) back in his own series and now, they’re getting animated. Star Trek: Lower Decks will be CBS All Access’ first animated series, and it’s a comedy.

Star Trek: Lower Decks will follow the support crew “serving on one of Starfleet’s least-important ships” according to startrek.com. It will be brought to us by Mike McMahan (Rick and Morty) who Trek fans know as the guy who started the TNG Season 8 (@TNG_S8) account on Twitter, where he posted plot lines to a fictional season of Star Trek: The Next Generation starting in 2011. McMahan also wrote the Harry Mudd (Rainn Wilson) episode of Short Treks.

McMahan is a true Trek fan. And, producer Alex Kurtzman was drawn in by his fandom as well as his talent. “Mike won our hearts with his first sentence: ‘I want to do a show about the people who put the yellow cartridge in the food replicator so a banana can come out the other end,” said Kurtzman. And, “His cat’s name is Riker. His son’s name is Sagan. The man is committed. He’s brilliantly funny and knows every inch of every Trek episode, and that’s his secret sauce: he writes with the pure, joyful heart of a true fan.”

McMahan himself made a comment  about the series to assuage any concern that fans might have about an animated Trek comedy. He said, “While Star Trek: Lower Decks is a half-hour, animated show at its core, it’s undeniably Trek – and I promise not to add an episode at the very end that reveals the whole thing took place in a training program.”

Amen to that!  We’re so excited to see what Star Trek: Lower Decks will bring to the Star Trek universe!!  What do you think of the news?
