Well this is fantastic news. According to Deadline, director Cathy Yan is set to take on Harley Quinn‘s next adventure. This is different news than we had previously heard with Suicide Squad‘s director David Ayer set to take on the girls. Is this the same film? Is this another film staring the bada** women of Gotham City? Here’s what we think.
Yan has been selected above many male colleagues to take on a “girl gang” film for WB and DC and we’re gonna say it’s for a Birds of Prey / Gotham City Sirens film. Screenwriter Christina Hodson had a Birds of Prey script started back in November of 2016. With Hodson now working on the new Batgirl film, it would make sense for Batgirl to tie into the film, given that she’s a member of the Birds of Prey. And seeing that it’s a Harley Quinn film with Margot Robbie invested in a project, we believe it’s a Birds of Prey film with the Gotham City Sirens.

Speaking of Robbie, it’s been reported that she’s adamant that the film be directed by a female. Her company, LuckyChap, will be producing the film so she had a lot of pull for the film to go in her direction. Last news we heard about the Gotham City Sirens film, it was still in development with Ayer at the helm with Robbie starring. Until the air is clear about that film versus the one that Yan is directing, I believe the projects will be combined into one.
Whatever film Cathy Yan’s taking, it will be her second film credit! Her debut film, Dead Pigs, was well received at Sundance. Plus this is huge step in inclusiveness over at DC. She will be the first Asian woman to direct a superhero film and the second woman to direct a superhero film for DC. This is really exciting, as many have been asking Hollywood for more diversity in casting and production. I, for one, am really looking forward to seeing more choices like this from our favorite franchises.
