There is some new blood that has been added to the cast of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY and a little role swapping going on.

Shazad Latif (Penny Dreadful) will now star as Lieutenant Tyler, a Starfleet officer in the Federation, Rekha Sharma (Battlestar Galactica, The 100) will star as Commander Landry, the security officer of the Starship Discovery, Kenneth MitchellAstronaut Wives Club, Frequency) will star as Kol, a commanding officer in the Klingon Empire, Clare McConnell (Dim the Fluorescents) will star as Dennas, a leader in the Klingon Empire and Damon Runyan (Suits, Supernatural, Gangland Undercover) will star as Ujilli, a leader in the Klingon Empire.

First things first, on a positive note I love that Rekha Sharma is joining the Discovery as the security officer. She was a hardcore badass, in Battlestar Galactica, that embraced her new Cylon self, when she discovered who she really was, after being the President’s right hand man, for so long. Perfect casting for a security officer.

Now about the role swapping. It was previously reported that Latif was cast as Commanding Officer Kol and according to the statement made by CBS today, that role will now be played by Kennth Mitchell.

What?!

Honestly this isn’t new in the Star Trek world. If you remember back in that day, when they were casting TNG a role reversal happened then. Marina Sirtis was actually cast as the security officer and Denise Crosby as Troi. You all know what happened then and it worked!

It’s all this other behind-the scenes drama that makes me nervous. The production is delayed, again, I guess. It’s gone from January 2017 to Fall 2017 to no one is sure or will make a statement about it.

The cast is insane, so I hope, as a diehard fan of Star Trek and someone who wants another series more than a roof over my head or a taco on Tuesday, that it is good. Amen.
