Announced today on StarWars.com, we discovered the returning cast and some new cast members for Star Wars: Episode IX. While everyone you expect to return will be back, including Mark Hamill, one cast member is making a interesting reappearance. The late Carrie Fisher will be included in the film. But how?
For months we had back and forth on whether or not they would include her. Whether re-used footage, unreleased footage, recasting or CGI. While Lucasfilm was adamant that they wouldn’t do anything with Fisher, it seems they’ve back peddled a bit. J.J. Abrams said via a statement accompanying the casting news, it was impossible to tell the story without her.
We desperately loved Carrie Fisher. Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us. We were never going to recast, or use a CG character. With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, we have found a way to honor Carrie’s legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII.
It appears to be the right decision. We currently don’t know how it’s going to work in the context of the film, especially given that it was The Last Jedi material. But it doesn’t make sense to not include her. And having her die off screen may be seen as an insult to her legacy.
I’ve personally gone back and forth on this. What is the best way to honor her memory and keep General Leia Organa in the film? It seems that Abrams found a way to do it with the footage. Hopefully it’s not too jarring. But I’m happy to hear they’re going to be doing something with her. Maybe her footage will be in the form of a “Force ghost”. We’ll have to wait and see what happens.
What do you think of the news? Are you looking forward to seeing Carrie in the film? I think I might cry. Let us know! Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more Star Wars news. The untitled Episode IX film will be in theaters December 20th, 2019.
