Disney announced the development of Marvel’s Captain Marvel 2 today. WandaVision staff writer Megan McDonnell is in negotiations to write the script, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Brie Larson reprises her role as the superhero Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel. Marvel is hoping to find a female director for the sequel.
Captain Marvel was the first female centric movie from Marvel and made over a billion dollars at the box office. The first film focused on the origin story of Danvers who inadvertantly got involved in a war between alien races. Danvers was in an explosion involving the tesseract, that made her immensely powerful.
Captain Marvel joined the Avengers in their quest to reverse Thanos’ (Josh Brolin) finger snap in Avengers: Endgame. The last we saw of Danvers was at Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr.) funeral.
There are no story details other than a time jump from the 1990s to the present. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige mentioned the sequel at the end of the Marvel panel at 2019 San Diego Comic Con.
I have to wonder if the Skrulls’ storyline is over. The Skrulls showed up in the Spider-Man: Far From Home end credits. They were working with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) in space. Some believe that signaled the beginning of S.W.O.R.D. Considering that Danvers flies freely in space, it’s possbile she could return to work with the Skrulls and Fury again. Or we could get a completely new story for Carol.
Captain Marvel 2 will possibly be released in 2022.
