In a post made to Instagram on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, Captain America 4 star Anthony Mackie announced a new subtitle and release date for the upcoming fourth Cap movie. Previously Captain America: New World Order, the Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel will instead be titled Captain America: Brave New World.

Brave New World

Captain America 4’s previous subtitle, New World Order, matched the title of the first episode of 2021’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. However, it is perhaps worth noting that the sixth and final episode of the show’s first season seemed to debut a new title for the series: Captain America and the Winter Soldier.

The movie’s new subtitle, Brave New World, is taken from Act V Scene 1 of The Tempest by William Shakespeare. In that scene, Miranda, who has lived her entire life on a secluded island, expresses her wonder at the revelation of the existence of the wider world. However, the phrase was previously used by Aldous Huxley for the title of his seminal 1932 dystopian novel Brave New World. Since then, the novel title’s subversion of Miranda’s line has given the phrase a cynical undertone.

Mackie’s announcement regarding the new title and release date was posted in the caption of an on-set photo. The behind-the-scenes shot includes co-star Harrison Ford discussing a scene with Mackie, who appears in his full Cap regalia (including, of course, the shield). In the foreground are two on-set chairs bearing the newly unveiled logo for Brave New World.

The caption mentions advice from Ford. The veteran action hero steps into the role of General Thaddeus E. “Thunderbolt” Ross in Brave New World. Ross was previously played by the late William Hurt in The Incredible Hulk and Captain America: Civil War. In addition, Liv Tyler will reprise her Hulk role as Betty Ross. The Instagram post caption continues that Captain America: Brave New World will be released in theaters on May 3, 2024.
