Summer is coming in hot, which means camping season is almost upon us. There’s nothing better than being out in the great outdoors, but sometimes all that fresh air can get a little stale. If you are looking for light, portable camping games to help spice up your hours on the hiking trail, check out our indestructible picks.

These games can be found at major retailers, but we ask that you give your local game store a chance first. They offer games at the same price as the box stores but will appreciate your business so much more.

Kluster

Kluster is the perfect way to start this list. It is the ultimate camping/hiking game with minimal setup, easy-to-master rules and an indestructible set of pieces. To start, players share magnetic stones equally and must take turns placing one stone at a time inside the arena made with the cord. The first player to get rid of all of their magnets wins. Though the premise is simple, the addition of the super-strong magnet pieces adds a level of strategy to the game.

Game Mechanics:

  • Supports solo play or 1-4 players
  • Set up is less than 1 minute
  • Dexterity/Strategy Game
  • Playtime: 10-20 minutes

Kluster is from Borderline Editions, and you can find more information here.

Cinco Linko

Cinco Linko is a tile-laying game that uses Connect 4 mechanics and supports up to four-person play. Designed to attach to backpacks and be taken on the go, it is the quintessential hiking game. The rules are simple: using your stack of tiles, you try to make a line of five before any of your opponents can. Each tile must line up with the flat side of another (no placing corners on corners), and your line of five can go orthogonally or diagonally.

Game Mechanics:

  • 2-4 players
  • Set up in less than 1 minute
  • Tile laying/Strategy Game
  • Playtime: 5-15 minutes

Cinco Linko is from Big Potato Games; you can find more information here.

Honeycombs

Honeycombs is a tile-matching game that is highly portable and reminds me of Spot It. The object is to connect your tiles by matching their symbols. The more matches you make, the more points you earn. The honeybee is wild and can be connected with any symbol. While this is the heaviest game on the list, it supports three unique game variants, each with its own speed and competitiveness.

Game Mechanics:

  • 1-8 Players with Team Options
  • 3 Varied Game Modes
  • Tile Laying/Matching
  • Playtime: 15-30 minutes

Hive

Hive is a game buzzing with possibility and strategy — a strategic game for two players that is not restricted by a board and can be played anywhere on any flat surface. Hive is made up of 22 pieces, 11 black and 11 white, resembling a variety of creatures, each with a unique way of moving. The object of the game is to surround your opponent’s queen while at the same time trying to block your opponent from doing likewise to your queen. The player to surround his opponent’s queen wins the game.

IQ Fit

IQ Fit is a compact 3D puzzle game that can be played anywhere. One of the protruding sides of each puzzle piece has one ball, and the other has two balls, so depending on how you orientate a puzzle piece, you get more or fewer balls. Once solved, all puzzle pieces will fit on the game board without any holes uncovered. While this game does technically come with a paper puzzle challenge book, you can take turns setting pieces with your partner to see who can solve the random puzzle first/faster and leave the book at home to make this game truly indestructible.

Game Mechanics:

  • 1-2 Players
  • Puzzle/Brain Teaser Gameplay
  • 100 Challenge Combinations
  • Playtime: 5-15 minutes

IQ Fit is from SmartGames, and more information can be found here.
