The November Update is coming to Destiny and, along with a host of other information, Bungie dropped a teaser for an upcoming feature: Refer-a-Friend.
“After this update is deployed, some of the more tech savvy among you will be able to dig up some details for a new initiative we have planned to arrive just in time for the holiday season. We’re planning something new to recognize and reward the Sherpas among you. We are calling it Refer-a-Friend.
Maybe you have a friend who will be getting Destiny as a gift this season. Perhaps their gift-giver will even be picking it up for them at a holiday sale coming to a store near you. If you intend to show them the way to the mountaintop, we’ll have new rewards aimed at recognizing your service to the KinderGuardian.”
While this is indeed exciting for people attempting to get their friends into the Destiny Universe, I wonder how this is going to be implemented. Most refer a friend programs and bonuses revolve around a subscription-based service such as World of Warcraft. What perks will Bungie offer to make it worthwhile? I assume Destiny will follow the same course as most other programs with all in game perks being cosmetic. The recent launch of microtransactions makes this the likeliest course of action.
We will find out more in the upcoming weeks, if I were a betting woman I would say before December. Based on the slim amount of information they’ve given us so far, it seems to be tied to the upcoming holiday event in game. In theory it will launch before then, maybe first week in December, but I’m just guessing here. They could hold it until closer to the end of the year when a good chunk of people have some time off from work and/or school. Either way, I enjoy the way Destiny is constantly evolving, it’s enough to keep me logging in.
