August One is the latest television project by Bryan Singer and it’s an interesting one. The X-Men director has recently found success in television with Legion and has decided to work on another project. According to Deadline, it will be produced with Blackpills Digital Media and the series will mark their second collaboration.

August One is described as a futuristic thriller where the Roman Empire never collapsed. Instead it became a technologically advanced civilization but it’s on the brink of collapse. According to the production company it’s “a society where the concepts of slavery, corruption and sin have been culturally normalized.” Yeesh. Creator John Cabrera teamed up with Singer again after their success on H+, another digital series. Cabrera spoke of his excitement to work with Singer’s production company once more.

This series doesn’t sound all that great to me. While the thought of a futuristic Roman Empire is interesting to explore, the fact that slavery is “normalized” – I’m not on board with. I don’t care that it’s the Empire, it’s not something we should do in this day and age. With racial tensions high in America, it doesn’t seem appropriate to incorporate. While I could be wrong and the show could be great. The fact that they put that out there immediately leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
